Weekly Blog #3
Each day, Annie and Monica attend class like I do. Annie has a bunch of business classes. She complains often of the teachers talking about foreign politics, and especially her teacher's opinions on America's current president. But she loves to talk about the current state of the stock market and what was happening today in the business world.
After classes, she enjoys going to the gym with her boyfriend. She braids her long black hair in a single french braid down her back. She always has colorful leggings matched to her tank top, and laced up neon blue sneakers. She talks a lot about how much she like the use the stair master, and always recommends I try it.
When she comes back from the gym, she always cooks dinner with Monica. They make all sorts of interesting recipes, always trying new ones they found on the internet that day. Their favorites include nachos, melting the cheese in the microwave and adding tons of sour cream and guacamole. The other day they attempted to make a spicy Indian curry, and the whole room smelt so strongly of chili powder it was almost hard to breathe!
Annie really enjoys making dessert, her favorite being cinnamon rolls. Almost once a week, Annie and Monica make the dough from scratch and create all sorts of new combinations using different ingredients each time. My personal favorite they have made has been the banana chocolate chip rolls. They made almost twenty one night and had me invite all my friends from home over to try them. They were crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside with oozing chocolate in the center of the wound bread.
Other than cinnamon rolls, her other favorite dessert it cookies. She makes a batch almost every week, from classic sugar cookies to fun frosted M&M ones. My personal favorite is her double chocolate chunk. Monica loves when she makes white chocolate macadamia, and her boyfriend's favorite is oatmeal raisin. We constantly all fight as to which one she should make for this week.
Annie is one of the kindest people I have known since moving here. If I mention something, even in passing, she immediately notes it down and attempts to help me find the best place in the area, or text all the people she knows for their help. For example, I mentioned I was upset I would be missing my hometown's haunted house this year. I have been going since I was young, and this is the first year I won't be home to make it. She immediately told me about another haunted house in this area, and sent me the link. She texted one of her friends who used to work there to ask for more details. She was so enthusiastic and kind about it, I almost forgot my sadness on not attending the one at home.
One of Annie's favorite foods is a grapefruit. There are many grapefruit trees in the area, and her grandmother loves to send her packages of grapefruit in the mail. She pours sugar on the slices of grapefruit, and eats it all in one bite. She talks about how her grandmother and her used to go into their backyard and pick a fruit every morning for breakfast.
One of Annie's favorite genres is horror. Currently, her and Monica are having a horror movie marathon, and they are watching every horror movie that is available on Netflix. She watches it like a child watching cartoons on a Sunday morning, eyes glued to the screen without fault.
I feel lucky that I have Annie as a roommate, as many of the girls aren't so lucky. She has taught me a lot about Auckland and New Zealand as a whole, and I don't think my abroad experience would be nearly as fun if I didn't have Annie and Monica to share it with!
